Update: East Brunswick drowning was accidental in nature

EAST BRUNSWICK–Bharat Patel, 62, his daughter-in-law Nisha Patel, 33, and her daughter, 8, have been identified as the victims who perished on June 22 in a pool at a home in East Brunswick, Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher Kuberiet and Chief of Police Frank LoSacco announced on June 23.

All three victims resided at the home in East Brunswick, according to a prepared statement from the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

East Brunswick police responded at approximately 4:18 p.m. to 43 Clearview Road and found the three victims unresponsive in the pool; they were pronounced dead shortly after being found, according to the statement.

Although the investigation is active, it was determined that electricity did not play a part in the death of these three victims, according to updated information released on June 24. The above-ground pool was mostly shallow at 3½ feet deep, but there was a portion of the pool that was 7 feet deep. It doesn’t appear that the victims knew how to swim, officials said.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information should call East Brunswick Police Department Detective Kimberly DiParisi at 732-390-6900 or Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Mark Morris at 732-745-3927.

South Brunswick Mayor Charles Carley asked for “a moment to reflect upon that terrible tragedy” during the June 23 council meeting, as the Patels recently moved from South Brunswick.
