Bronx residents face charges in Marlboro phone scam attempt

MARLBORO – Four residents of the Bronx, N.Y., have been charged with attempting to scam a Marlboro resident out of money.

According to a press release from the Marlboro Police Department, on June 23, a resident of Marlboro told police she received a phone call from an unknown individual who
said her grandson had been arrested and needed bail money to be released.

The woman told police the caller informed her that he would come to her home to pick up the money and told her not to tell anyone about her grandson’s arrest. The woman contacted her grandson and learned he had not been arrested, according to the press release.

At that time, the woman visited Marlboro police headquarters to report the incident. Police said that when four people showed up at the woman’s home to pick up the money, they were arrested without incident.

Police said a 24-year-old man was charged with theft by deception. A 23-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man were charged with conspiracy to commit theft by deception. All four individuals are from the Bronx. Police said they were processed and released on summonses.

Officers involved in the investigation were Detective Lt. Joseph Tomazic, Detective Sgt. David Glenny, Detective Edward Ungrady, Patrol Sgt. Javier Garguillo, Patroman Taylor Rounds and Patrolman Christopher VanCuren.

Police said the theft by deception charge can result in a fine and jail time depending on the severity of the charge. They asked residents to remain vigilant and to immediately report phone calls of this nature to the police department.
