SPOTSWOOD–With state-issued social distancing restrictions continuing to lax, Mayor Edward Seely updated borough residents on the current state of affairs.
“[I] hope all is well with you. It would seem that our perseverance is paying off; the numbers for New Jersey have been level for almost a week now. Let’s all hope the downward trend continues. If we keep doing our part, it will. Our number of positives [for COVID-19 cases] is at 98 presently, with three lives lost. I pray we will not experience any further losses,” Seely said in a prepared statement.
Seely said restaurants and bars have been allowed to open for outdoor service as of June 15, and those he has seen in business seem to be adjusting well to the guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and health department.
“This may make it possible for some folks to salvage events they may have had planned and thought they would need to cancel,” Seely said in the statement. “Additionally, shopping malls will begin to open on June 29, and, of course, the same safety practices will be in place as they are elsewhere.”
As of June 22, Seely said local sports organizations can also resume practice, without contact. If all goes well, actual competitions can begin on July 6.
”Given the relaxation of some of the restrictions, many of us are starting to plan our vacations. I know I am. I will be traveling to Virginia to see my sister, and then on to Maryland to put my feet in the sand,” Seely said. “I don’t mind telling you that I am a little nervous, but I absolutely must get away. I will be social distancing and maintaining safe practices; it’s not only my health but the health of others as well.”
The county will hold a Drive Through Food Distribution at 9:30 a.m. on June 27 in the Novo Nordisk parking lot, 800 Scudders Mill Road, Plainsboro. They are preparing packages for up to 1500 families, according to Seely.
”In addition to the Primary Election on July 7, we are looking ahead to the November election in our own municipality. The packets are now available; thus far, two have been picked up for mayor and four for council,” Seely said. “If you are interested, please make an appointment to obtain a packet from the borough clerk.”
Completed packets need to be submitted no later than Aug. 31 at 4 p.m. Links to further information on both elections are on the homepage of the website.
