Alleged drunk driver injures two others in crash on border of East Brunswick and Old Bridge

EAST BRUNSWICK–A 21-year-old resident of Somerset,crashed his vehicle on July 4 while traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 18 from the Old Bridge border, according to the East Brunswick Police Department.

At approximately 5:02 a.m., on July 4, dispatch received 9-1-1 calls that a vehicle was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 18 from the Old Bridge border, according to a prepared statement from the East Brunswick Police Department.

The vehicle crashed into another vehicle that was traveling southbound on Route 18 in the left lane of travel, near Hope Street, in a head-on collision, according to police.

The driver and passenger in the Ford Fiesta had to be extricated by the East Brunswick Fire Department, with the driver being unresponsive. They were both eventually transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, according to police.

The driver of the Honda Pilot – the male from Somerset – was also transported to Robert Wood Johnson, according to police. He was charged with driving while intoxicated. Additionally, for the injuries sustained by a female passenger, he was charged with second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree assault by auto, according to police. Similarly, for the injuries sustained by the male driver, the man was charged with third-degree aggravated assault and fourth-degree assault by auto, according to police.

Both victims, as well as,the man, were admitted to the hospital for their injuries. At this time, they are all expected to survive, according to police.
