METUCHEN – As work on power restoration continues after Tropical Storm Isaias, the Metuchen Public Library and Edgar Middle School are open for residents to use internet and charge their devices.

Some 262 homes in the borough are without power, Mayor Jonathan Busch said in a social media post on Aug. 5.

“As we continue to evaluate the storm’s damage, we have just learned from PSE&G that it may be a few days before power is restored to these homes,” he said. “We are doing everything we can to be the ‘squeaky wheel’ but we are also aware that there are 31,000 homes in Middlesex County without power.”

Busch said borough officials have opened the Metuchen Public Library and worked with the Metuchen Board of Education to open Edgar Middle School for residents who rely on internet access as they continue to work from home.

“We will continue to evaluate the need for access to facilities like these on a daily basis,” he said. “Individuals are expected to stay socially distant from one another and face coverings shall be worn at all times while using the facilities.”

The Metuchen Public Library will open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Edgar Middle School will open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Central Avenue and other roads remain closed due to storm damage of fallen trees and Durham Avenue and other roads are closed for utility work, according to the Metuchen Police Department through a Nixle message on Aug. 5.
