Writer supports Schmid for Congress in 2020

Typing Letter to the Editor for the Opinion page.

Democrats Andy Kim, Mikie Sherill and Tom Malinowski are serving their first terms in Congress and represent competitive districts. However, they are unafraid to condemn President Donald Trump’s corruption and attacks on our election.

Republican Chris Smith has 39 years in Congress and claims to be a bipartisan moderate. He has remained silent on every corrupt act by President Trump.

But Congressman Smith’s silence on President Trump’s attack on the United State Postal Service (USPS), particularly since President Trump has admitted he is trying to reduce mail-in ballots and sway the election, is beyond comprehension.

The postal service is a public good that seniors, veterans and millions of Americans depend on for commerce and medications. That we will rely on it this November to facilitate our election means it needs help now.

Congressman Smith will talk about his support for the USPS, but he has had two opportunities to provide the funding USPS says it needs: HR 6425, of which he is not a co-sponsor, and the HEROES Act, which he voted against.

How is it that “bipartisan moderate” Congressman Smith can’t summon the courage to stand up to President Trump over topics as apolitical as the postal service and fair elections?

Why won’t Congressman Smith speak with the authority of his 39 years of service and lead his party?

Congressman Smith accumulates bipartisan statistics when it is easy, but when the stakes are high he is silent. New Jersey should send Stephanie Schmid to Congress so New Jersey and our democracy will have someone who will fight for us no matter what.
