The Matawan Borough Council has authorized the promotion of Matawan Police Department Detective Brian Murphy to the rank of sergeant.

Police Chief Thomas Falco said Murphy “was the next candidate on the current sergeant’s promotional list after a competitive testing process, governed by local ordinance.”

The council members passed a resolution authorizing Murphy’s promotion on Aug. 5.

In related news, the council members authorized the hiring of Cory Nusbaum as a patrolman with the Matawan Police Department.

Falco said Nusbaum graduated from the 21st Basic Police Recruit Class of the Atlantic County Police Training Center as an alternate route candidate.

In New Jersey, an alternate route candidate is an individual who does not hold a probationary or temporary appointment as a police officer, but who is seeking such an appointment, according to the Camden County College website.

“The promotion of Detective Murphy and the hiring of Officer Nusbaum are in advance of Lt. Patrick Walker’s retirement after 25 years of service, effective Dec. 31. Lt. Walker is currently using accrued time off prior to his retirement,” Falco said.
