Central Jersey residents feel shaking from earthquake

Residents of central New Jersey were awakened at about 2 a.m. this morning, Sept. 9, to shaking caused by a 3.1 magnitude earthquake.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake originated in or near the East Freehold section of Freehold Township. The depth of the earthquake was reported as 5 kilometers (3.1 miles).

No damage is expected. Minor aftershocks are possible, but have not yet been reported, according to reports.

Reports indicate the earthquake was felt as far away as New York City and Philadelphia.

The Manalapan Police Department confirmed the report of an earthquake at about 3 a.m.

Comments made in the immediate aftermath of the rare event by Facebook users centered around jabs about an earthquake in New Jersey being par for the course in 2020.
