SOUTH BRUNSWICK – South Brunswick Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau officers, along with Patrol Bureau officers, will be conducting an enhanced truck enforcement crackdown over the next month around the township.
The first phase of this effort is focused on the Kendall Park section of town. Officers will be targeting traffic on New Road between Route 1 and Route 27, according to information provided by the police department on Oct. 20.
The police officers assigned to this enforcement effort are focused on reducing commercial vehicles in residential areas, according to the statement.
The current township ordinance prohibits trucks over 36 tons (72,000 pounds) from traveling on New Road, with the exception of local traffic.
Traffic Bureau Sergeant Gary Holsten, who is leading the effort, said, “We conduct these campaigns to raise awareness of local ordinance restrictions on truck traffic. We don’t want overweight trucks in residential neighborhoods that should not be there. They are only allowed to use the road if they are making a local delivery.”
Message boards alerting trucks to the weight restrictions have already been placed in the enforcement zone. Overweight vehicles cause damage to local and state roadways. Enforcement programs like this will increase awareness and promote commercial vehicle safety.
