Bordentown family physician Mary F. Campagnolo, MD, MBA, FAAFP, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the nation’s only medical society devoted to primary care, representing 136,700 physicians and medical students.
Campagnolo was one of 18 physicians named to the AAFP Board of Directors at its annual Congress of Delegates in early October.
She will serve a three-year term, advocating on behalf of family physicians nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system, according to information provided by the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians (NJAFP).
A longtime, active member in the NJAFP, Campagnolo has served in various leadership roles at the state level, including president-elect, president and board chair. A member of the AAFP since 1985, Campagnolo has served the AAFP as a member of the Commission on Quality and Practice, plus as member and later chair of the Commission on Finance and Insurance. She has also represented New Jersey as both an alternate and delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates, according to the statement.
“Dr. Campagnolo has been a tireless advocate for family physicians, primary care and health care as a whole for years,” Ray Saputelli, MBA, CAE, executive vice president, NJAFP, said in the statement. “Her hard work and dedication, coupled with expert knowledge and natural leadership skills, make her, without a doubt, a wonderful addition to the AAFP’s Board. On behalf of NJAFP and our physician members, we congratulate Dr. Campagnolo on this honorable appointment.”
Campagnolo has practiced family medicine for 35 years, currently at Virtua-Primary Care of Mansfield, part of Virtua Medical Group. She also serves as medical director and designated institutional official for graduate medical education at Virtua Health where she oversees the accreditation and operations of five Virtua-sponsored residencies, as well as the training for more than 400 students, resident physicians and fellows from numerous affiliated regional academic medical centers annually, according to the statement.
In addition, she is medical director for the Virtua Medical Group’s value-based patient care programs in collaboration with commercial and government health insurers. She has chaired the Department of Family Medicine-Virtua North-Memorial Hospital of Burlington County in Mount Holly since 1993, and was awarded the Distinguished Career Award in October 2019 by the Virtua Health Medical Staff, according to the statement.
Prior to her work in New Jersey, Campagnolo practiced family medicine at Caroline Health Services in Denton, Maryland, to satisfy her National Health Service Corps/U.S. Public Health Service scholarship commitment. She is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in geriatrics.
Additionally, Campagnolo received a AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education. She also served as 220th president of the Medical Society of New Jersey in 2012-13, the third of four women elected president since the organization’s founding in 1766, according to the statement.
Campagnolo earned her Bachelor of Science degrees in chemistry and zoology from George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and earned her medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her family medicine residency program at Overlook Hospital in Summit, where she served as chief resident. She earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers University School of Business in Camden.
