FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP – The Township Committee has amended the Freehold Township Police Department ordinance to increase the maximum number of special law enforcement officers and to officially create a new class of special law enforcement officers.
Officials took the action on Oct. 28.
The maximum number of Class II special law enforcement officers has been increased from two to four. Class II officers may be assigned duties that include parking enforcement, traffic enforcement, court officer, traffic control and patrol duties.
And, the ordinance officially creates a Class III special law enforcement officer position in the Freehold Township Police Department. The position has existed, but had not been codified until the governing body’s recent action.
Class III special law enforcement officers may be assigned duties permitted by state statute that include providing security at a public school, a non-public school or a community college.
The maximum number of Class III officers permitted in Freehold Township is eight.
Finally, committee members deleted the position of Class I special law enforcement officers. They said the position was removed because it is no longer used in Freehold Township.
The duties of Class I officers had included park patrol, traffic control and court detail, and the maximum number of Class I officers permitted in the township was four.
