JACKSON – A resident of Jackson has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident that occurred in the township on Christmas Eve.
On Dec. 30, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that Roberto Alcazar-Sanchez, 27, has been charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license while being involved in a motor vehicle accident resulting in death.
“Mr. Alcazar-Sanchez has not yet been apprehended and his whereabouts are currently unknown. A warrant has been issued for his arrest and his name has been placed in the National Crime Information Center database,” Billhimer said on Dec. 30.
As of Jan. 4, Alcazar-Sanchez still had not been arrested, according to authorities.
On Dec. 24 at 6 p.m., Jackson police were called to the area of Cedar Swap Road and Interstate 195 to investigate a report of a motor vehicle collision with serious injuries, according to Billhimer.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit and Jackson police determined that a 2010 Mercedes Benz being driven by Norman Shtab, 83, of Howell, was exiting I-195 at Exit 21. His wife, Phyllis Shtab, 81, was a passenger in the vehicle.
As Shtab was attempting to turn left onto Cedar Swamp Road, his vehicle and a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado collided. Authorities said the driver of the Chevrolet fled the scene on foot and said an investigation determined Alcazar-Sanchez was the driver of the Chevrolet.
A passenger in the Chevrolet, a 30-year old man from Wrightstown, was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, where he was treated for his injuries and released.
Norman and Phyllis Shtab were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Norman was treated for his injuries and released. On Dec. 26, Phyllis died of the injuries she sustained in the collision, according to authorities.
Billhimer said that during the investigation, Alcazar-Sanchez’s girlfriend, Reyna Mendez, 27, of Jackson, was questioned by law enforcement officers. He said authorities determined she allegedly provided false information to detectives. Mendez was charged with hindering apprehension or prosecution and released pending a future court date.
