The South River Police Department is urging residents to be alert to phone scams demanding immediate Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) bill payments via pre-paid cards.

Over the past few days, there has been an increase in the number of phone scams being reported, according to information provided by police on Jan. 23. As per the reported incidents, residents are receiving phone calls from an individual pretending to be a PSE&G employee. The individual then requests immediate payment via a pre-paid card or their utility service will be shut off.

The only way to protect against these scams is for customers to be cautious when contacted by someone threatening termination if they do not receive immediate payment via a pre-paid credit card, according to police.

As per customer service, PSE&G will never demand immediate payment in the form of a pre-paid credit card, according to the statement.

If you receive a call from anyone representing PSE&G demanding immediate payment, do not give them any personal or account information. Hang up the phone, and call the number listed on their website and bills: 1-800-436-7734.
