Despite the lingering pandemic, work is continuing on a major expansion of the Educational Services Commission of New Jersey’s (ESCNJ) Aquatics and Fitness Center on Cheesequake Road in the Parlin section of Sayreville.

The crown jewel of the expansion will be a 17,000-square-foot fitness center, with all new equipment and a robust schedule of classes for members, incorporating the latest methods and trends for strength building and weight loss, according to information provided by ESCNJ.

The center is slated to open this summer, once all safety guidelines are in place and state mandates are lifted.

“We heard from the community about the need for a much larger fitness area that is able to accommodate the latest programs and needs,” ESCNJ Superintendent Mark Finkelstein said in a prepared statement. “Moreover, we wanted to create a center for employment opportunities for many of the constituents we serve in the Sayreville area.”

Jobs will be provided to participants in ESCNJ’s Adult Community Services (ACS), the newest ESCNJ program. It offers individuals 21 and over with intellectual and developmental disabilities an opportunity to strive for independence by helping to develop their social, emotional and life skills, according to the statement. The end goal: Creating jobs.

The facility, replacing a gym that was only a fraction of the size, will have the latest high-tech treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and cardio equipment. It will also feature a private yoga studio, cycle studio, group fitness classes, TRX equipment, personal training, a pool and aquatic classes, according to the statement.
