JACKSON – A vacancy exists on the seven-member Jackson School District Board of Education and eligible residents may apply to serve on the panel.
Board member Thomas Colucci resigned on Jan. 21 after having served on the board for seven years.
He said that in addition to recovering from COVID-19 for several weeks, he recently retired from United Airlines as a pilot. He said his work schedule with a new position would not allow him to be able to commit to attending board meetings.
“It has been an honor to serve on the board,” Colucci said. “However, I knew with my new schedule I would not be able to attend board meetings consistently and I wanted to be fair to the students, staff and taxpayers, so I decided to step aside. It is a privilege to have had a part in supporting kids and their education. I will miss it.”
Board President Tara Rivera said Colucci, “served the board and this community well and we wish him nothing but the best.”
District administrators said interested candidates are expected to be interviewed by the board on Feb. 17. The individual who is appointed will serve through the board’s January 2022 reorganization meeting.
The individual who is appointed to fill the open seat, and/or any other qualified individual, will be able to file a nominating petition to run in the Nov. 2, 2021 election to fill the remaining year (2022) of the unexpired term.
Residents interested in being considered for the appointment must submit a resume and a cover letter that outlines their qualifications and their reasons for wanting to serve on the board. The deadline to submit the materials is Feb. 10.

Interested individuals must be a U.S. citizen; must have been a resident of the district for at least one year at the time of their appointment; be able to read and write; and be a registered voter in the district; among other qualifications.
