A Newark woman has been charged with two counts of assault by auto and one count each of child endangerment, driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license, having an uninsured motor vehicle and other motor vehicle violations after she was involved in a two-car crash on Route 1 North, according to the West Windsor Police Department.

The woman, who was driving with her eight-month-old child in a Nissan sport utility vehicle, was traveling on Route 1 near Carnegie Center when the accident occurred on May 6. She was driving in the left lane and swerved into the right lane, striking a Mercedes-Benz driven by a Monroe Township resident, police said.

The force of the impact sent both vehicles into the middle of the intersection of Route 1 North and Carnegie Center Drive, police said.

The woman and her infant, as well as the driver of the Mercedes-Benz, were taken to Capital Health Medical Center-Hopewell. The infant suffered a bruise to the head, and the driver of the Mercedes-Benz suffered upper torso and head injuries, police said.

The infant was turned over to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency, which is the child protection and child welfare agency in the New Jersey Department of Children and Families, for emergent foster care, police said.

The mother was taken to the Mercer County Corrections Center, pending an appearance in Mercer County Superior Court, police said.
