Spotswood seeks state grant funding for Michael Road Park

SPOTSWOOD–Seeking funding for upgrades at Michael Road Park, the Borough Council approved a resolution to apply for a New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) grant.

The borough requested $530,000 to carry out a project to improve recreation facilities at Michael Road Park, according to the council.

“Under the DCA Local Recreation Improvement Grant program, the borough is submitting an application for refurbishment and improvements at Michael Road Park. Mayor Jackie Palmer has recognized the borough’s parks and recreational facilities as essential to the overall quality of life of the residents and is excited to pursue this grant,” Business Administrator Ryan Michelson said.

The council approved the resolution on May 17 during the council meeting via video conference and in-person at the municipal building.

Michelson said Michael Road Park is a well-used park near the end of its lifespan for use, with the last significant improvement occurring nearly a decade ago.

The proposed improvements, Michelson said, include:

  • The installation of a large-scale playground structure, swings, play equipment and surface;
  • Replacement of two existing basketball courts;
  • The addition of a picnic pavilion area with tables;
  • Landscaping;
  • Accessible improvements; and
  • Sidewalks
