EATONTOWN – Six candidates – two Republicans, two Democrats and two individuals running independent of a political party – will be seeking two three-year terms on the Eatontown Borough Council in November.
According to the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office, Democrats Coleen Burnett and Mariel Hufnagel, Republicans David Gindi and Everett Lucas, and independent candidates Dee Slattery and Jasmine Story will be on the ballot in the Nov. 2 election.
The winning candidates will serve terms that will run from January 2022 through December 2024.
Story, who is a registered Democrat, is the only incumbent Borough Council member seeking re-election this year. Republican Councilman Joseph Olsavsky did not file a nominating petition and his term will end on Dec. 31.
Hufnagel ran in the 2020 general election and lost by a narrow margin.
Slattery, a registered Democrat, sought a Democratic nomination in 2020, but lost in the primary to the ticket of Hufnagel and Danielle Jones, who subsequently won a seat on the council.
Burnett, Gindi and Lucas are making their first bids for seats on the governing body.
In the June 8 primary election, the Democrats and Republicans ran unopposed.
Hufnagel received 379 votes and Burnett received 367 votes in the Democratic primary, and Lucas received 391 votes and Gindi received 390 votes in the Republican primary, according to results posted online by the clerk’s office.
Slattery and Story filed to run for office as independent candidates and did not have to participate in a primary election. Although they will campaign with the Eatontown Independents, both candidates remain affiliated with the Democratic Party.
In 2021, the Borough Council consists of four Republicans and two Democrats.
