Misfits Theatre Company to debut at Manalapan Recreation Center

MANALAPAN – The new Misfits Theatre Company, which was formed in April 2021 to enhance the arts and elevate local entertainment in the Manalapan area, will make its debut with a performance of an original musical comedy, “Waiting for Schlotsky.”

All performances will take place outside at the Dreyer pavilion lawn at the Manalapan Recreation Center, Route 522 and Taylors Mills Road. Dates and times are as follows: July 17 at 7 p.m. and July 18 at 2 p.m. (rain dates: July 22-23 at 7:30 p.m.), and July 24 at 7 p.m. and July 25 at 2 p.m. (rain dates: July 29-30 at 7:30 p.m.).

According to a press release, the theater company’s founder, Angela Ronan, is a speech-language pathologist who works full-time in an elementary school and has been living in Manalapan for nine years.

Ronan created the Misfits Theatre Company with the assistance of Manalapan Superintendent of Parks and Recreation Mona Cholowinski to find a home for fellow adult thespians in the neighborhood.

Her mission for the group is to provide a creative outlet for all adults in the community (18 and over) who have a passion for musical theater and need the time and space to play. The group’s goal is to improve mental health and allow people to fulfill their passions in a fun, safe and non-judgemental medium, according to the press release.

Ronan’s past musical education includes the Manhattan School of Music Prep Division, the Singer’s Forum, LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, more than 20 years of private voice lessons, All-State Chorus, 15 years of dance school and a minor in music from Hofstra University.

“Waiting for Schlotsky” was written by James Barone, Tina Barone and Helene Montagna and is based on the cult hit movie “Waiting for Guffman.”

“Waiting for Schlotsky” features Broadway hits such as “Another Op’nin,’ Another Show,” “I Got Rhythm,” “A Million Dreams,” “Too Darn Hot” and many more, according to the press release.

Tickets to the performances may be purchased in advance at https://register.communitypass.net/manalapan or one hour before showtime at the Dreyer pavilion concession stand.

Tickets are $12 for adults ($10 for seniors and children). Children under 5 will be admitted free. Bring a chair or a blanket to the outdoor performance. The lawn area will be open an hour before showtime.

The Misfits Theatre Company’s goal is to produce one full musical or play each year and then to be available for smaller, more personal performances such as holiday caroling, birthday parties or other special occasions, according to the press release.
