The North Brunswick Public Library announced its August 2021 adult programs.

  • Understanding Perspective in Art with April Zay, 7 p.m. Aug. 2
    Zay will cover 1- and 2-point perspective drawing for buildings and interior drawings. Supplies you’ll need are pencils, drawing paper and a ruler.

  • Virtual author visit with S. Kirk Walsh, author of “The Elephant of Belfast” at 7 p.m. Aug. 5

 

Join Walsh for a reading from and conversation about her first novel. Inspired by true events, this is a story of a young woman zookeeper and the elephant she’s compelled to protect through the German blitz of Belfast during World War II.

Work on a current project (embroidery, cross-stitch, knitting, crocheting, weaving, etc.) and enjoy the company of others.

  • Outdoor Tai Chi, 10 a.m. Aug. 7 and 21

 

Participants age 16 and up are invited to join teacher Vikram Sarath for safe and free Tai Chi sessions on the library’s lawn, 880 Hermann Road. Beginners are welcome. Social distancing will be observed. Appropriate face coverings are preferred until class begins.

Sessions are weather permitting.

No registration is required.

  • Introduction to Character Design, 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 10

 

During this virtual workshop, participants will join instructor David Torres and learn the art of character designing, including the basics of how to communicate personality and thematic purpose through visual design.

 

Whether you’re a fan of comics, anime, film, manga or any form of storytelling – all are welcome. Basic drawing and observational skills will be covered to provide participants the necessary tools for expressing their vision.

No prior drawing experience is required.

For ages 16 and up.

  • Virtual author visit with Stephanie Thornton Plymale, author of “American Daughter,” 7 p.m. Aug. 17

Join Stephanie Thornton Plymale for a virtual conversation about her bestselling book, a moving memoir tracing a childhood fraught with neglect, hunger, poverty, homelessness, ongoing sexual abuse, and a deeply troubled mother-daughter relationship, to eventual transcendence and redemption. Stephanie’s story is unique but its messages are universal, offering insight into what it means to survive, to rise above, to heal, and to forgive.

  • Introduction to Animation, 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 24

 

During this virtual workshop, participants will join instructor David Torres and learn how to create animation, including the basics of limited and full animation, and making your own style of movement come alive.

 

As a means of making this workshop open to everyone interested, Torres will use the free program Pencil 2D Animation, which is easy to download.

No prior drawing experience is required.

  • Mindfulness Meditation, 7 p.m. Aug. 2 and 16

 

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing one’s attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation.

Taught by Dr. Siobhán Gibbons Ed.D. a licensed psychologist in the State of New Jersey.

Sessions will be held on the library’s lawn facing Hermann Road. Bring a lawn chair and mask.
