Candidates file to run for school boards in Matawan-Aberdeen, Keyport, Holmdel, Hazlet and Middletown

When voters in Aberdeen Township, Matawan, Keyport, Holmdel, Hazlet and Middletown go to the polls on Nov. 2 to vote for municipal and state representatives, they will also vote to elect members of their local school boards.

July 26 was the deadline for New Jersey residents to file a nominating petition to run for a seat on a board of education. Elected school board members serve without compensation.

Aberdeen Township and Matawan are served by the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District Board of Education.

There are two three-year terms on the ballot for representatives of Aberdeen Township. The four candidates seeking the two seats are John Montone, Lisa Cashin, Dianna Pell and Joy Przywara. Montone and Przywara are current members of the board.

Thee is one three-year term on the ballot for a representative of Matawan. The two candidates seeking the seat are Shari Whalen and Katie Feiles. Whalen is a current member of the board.

In Hazlet, three available three-year terms on the Hazlet Township Public Schools Board of Education are being sought by incumbents Steven Grossman and William Kolibas, and by Jennifer Allgeier, David Nathan Bibb, Cindy Davis, Dara Retig, George Theis and Debra Wickenhauser, according to Monmouth County Clerk’s Office.

Board member David Asfour is running unopposed for a one-year term on the board.

Board member John Granite is not seeking to retain his seat.

In Holmdel, three available three-year terms on the Holmdel Township Schools Board of Education are being sought by incumbent Terence Wall, and by Surekha Collur, Jill Perez, Kristy O’Connor, Kimberly Tuccillo and Weiping Wang.

Board members Brian Foster and Victoria Flynn are not seeking to retain their seats.

Flynn, who is running for a seat in the New Jersey General Assembly, said, “I wish all the candidates the best as they step up to volunteer for this very important position in our community.”

In Keyport, the seats currently held by board members Laura Abrahamsen, Joseph Stahley and Jennifer Tevis on the Keyport Public Schools Board of Education will be on the ballot.

Abrahamsen, Stahley and Donna Spangler are running unopposed for three available three-year terms on the board. Tevis is not seeking to retain her seat.

In Middletown, there are three available three-year terms on the Middletown Township Public Schools Board of Education.

Incumbents Joan Minnuies and Deborah Wright, and Kate Farley, Brian Mason and Jaime Sanacore are seeking the three seats in a five-person race.

Board member Tom Giaimo is not seeking to retain his seat.

Editor’s note: In a Facebook post he wrote on Aug. 4, Brian Mason announced he was withdrawing from the race, leaving four candidates in the race for three three-year terms on the school board.
