In the interim, Eric Csolak will serve as the acting administrator. He is the district supervisor of student services (grades pre-K to 5) and will help Lattimer in the transition period.

Lattimer was chosen from a pool of candidates in one of the first hiring decisions to be recommended by Superintendent of Schools Carol Kelley, who herself took over the reins July 1.

A committee composed of Riverside faculty and staff, administrators and residents interviewed the candidates and selected several finalists that included Lattimer.

Lattimer is the principal of the Titusville Academy in Hopewell Township. It is a private, special education school that teaches children with learning and behavior difficulties.

Lattimer began her career as a math and science teacher in the Neptune Township Public Schools. She left the Neptune school district to become the principal of the Titusville Academy, which she has led for more than four years.

She also served as vice principal of the International Academy of the Trenton Charter School.

Lattimer earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh and a master’s degree in administration and leadership from Georgian Court University.

Kelley praised Lattimer for her passion for students, leadership ability and her knowledge of curriculum while Michael Volpe, the assistant superintendent for human resources, said that her skills and expertise will help a broad range of students to success academically.

Shelley, the former Riverside principal, was the third administrator to hold the principal’s post in the past five years since the death of Principal Bill Cirullo.

Cirullo, who grew up in Princeton, had been the principal at the Riverside School for 30 years until his death in February 2016.

Music teacher Paul Chapin then filled in as the acting principal until Valerie Ulrich was named to the principal’s post in 2016. She later resigned and Shelley was appointed principal in 2018.

Shelley resigned to move with his family to Pittsburgh, where his wife will be the senior pastor at the Shadyside Presbyterian Church. He will become the executive director for academics for grades 6-12 at the Environmental Charter School in Pittsburgh.

In a letter to the Riverside School community announcing his resignation, Shelley wrote that the decision was “agonizing” for his family on top of an already stressful year. He wrote that his family had “treasured” its life and work in Princeton for the past 12 years, and that he will miss the students, teachers, staff and parents.

“Riverside will always hold a special place in my heart. It is a community that values what really matter – a community that seeks to include and embrace all people, a community that fosters empathetic citizenship and a community that cares,” Shelley wrote.
