SOUTH BRUNSWICK – South Brunswick Mayor Charlie Carley has directed flags be lowered at the municipal complex in honor of Damon Ferber, a dedicated coach and longtime board member of the South Brunswick Athletic Association.
Ferber died after a motorcycle crash on July 31; his funeral service is set for Aug. 11.
“Damon Ferber represented everything that makes our community great,” Carley said in a prepared statement. “He was constantly working to improve youth sports and care for his family. Ferber was a long-time member of the South Brunswick Athletic Association. He was both a board member and a coach. You could always find him at Rowland Park prepping the fields for games. Prior to the crash, Coach Ferber had just led his team to a victory in a championship win at the Covino Invitational Tournament in Montgomery. His team has dedicated this win to him. He had coached this group for the past 7 years.”
Ferber, 51, a resident of the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick, was born in West Islip, New York, and moved to Edison when he was 5, according to his obituary, posted by M.J. Murphy Funeral Home in the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.
Kerber was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Metuhen in 1988, and a graduate of Kean College in 1992, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
He was employed by Miller’s Rentals for more than 30 years and worked as a warehouse manager, fabricator of tents, and the “MacGyver” on the job, according to his obituary.
In the winter, Ferber was at St. Augustine’s watching one or more of his children playing basketball or coaching the St. Augustine Knights girls’ basketball team, according to information released by the township.
Ferber leaves behind his wife Debbie, and his four children Justin, Kylie, Matthew and Alyssa.
Ada Hung, on behalf of the South Brunswick Vikings 13U Baseball Team, set up a GoFundMe page to help with the family’s funeral costs.
“You never saw Damon without one of his children or Debbie by his side,” she wrote. “[H]e was always at school plays, school events, baseball and softball games, watching cheerleading or just being with his family.
“Damon enjoyed working in the garage on cars, and his woodworking projects. If you have ever driven by the Ferbers’ house during the holidays you have seen the beautiful sleigh and reindeer that Damon created. And the lights are always perfectly placed.
“In addition to cars and woodworking Damon loved to take the kids to the family home in New York where they would hunt and fish,” she wrote.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 11 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Road Monmouth Junction.
