MILLSTONE – On Aug. 3, the Millstone Elks hosted a golf outing at Gambler Ridge, Upper Freehold Township, to raise money to support Veterans Affairs.
According to a press release from the Millstone Elks, the organization supports many groups and veterans are one of the most prominent groups that receive assistance.
Money that was raised during the golf outing will support local veterans and their families, according to the press release.
Following the golf outing, the Millstone Elks hosted a meal honoring the late Jerry Gottlieb, a longtime Millstone Township resident who was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Gottlieb died on June 27 after a yearlong period of illness, according to an obituary posted online by the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold Borough.
Gottlieb was a retail business owner in New Rochelle, N.Y., for 35 years. Upon retirement, Jerry and his wife, Estelle, moved to Millstone Township and made their residence in the original farmhouse that was purchased by Estelle’s parents in 1945, according to his obituary.
Gottlieb is survived by his wife of 71 years, Estelle; sons, Steven and Arthur; and daughters-in-law, Julia Mercado and Wendy Gottlieb, according to his obituary.
Throughout the years, many in the community, including the Millstone Elks, “adopted” the Gottlieb family, assisting with home renovations, yard cleanups and more, endearing them to all, according to the press release.
The members of the Millstone Elks said they were privileged to have Estelle Gottlieb attend the banquet and participate in the event.
Estelle was applauded for the sacrifices that not only her husband made, but that she made while he was on board the USS Intrepid protecting the United States.
A unanimous decision was made to donate a portion of the day’s proceeds to the USS Intrepid museum in New York City in memory of Jerry Gottlieb and his service to the nation.
According to the Millstone Elks, Estelle and Jerry both had a deep love and sense of pride for the Intrepid. They made frequent trips to New York City to educate visitors and to share their personal experiences about the vessel.
