The Board of Education of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools has appointed Robert P. Mooney as the interim superintendent of Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools.

His appointment was approved June 30 during a special meeting, according to information provided by Middlesex County Vo-Tech on Aug. 24.

Mooney will serve as interim superintendent while the board searches for a permanent superintendent to succeed Dianne Veilleux, who served for four years. The search includes a survey of stakeholders, available on the district home page, www.mcvts.net.

“Our district is in good hands with Mr. Mooney,” Keith Jones II, president of the MCVTS Board of Education, said in a prepared statement. “He will be a steady hand at the helm while we search for our new leader going forward.”

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to not just help Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools find the best possible person to serve as their new superintendent, but also to help the district continue to move forward during this transition,” Mooney said in the statement.

Mooney brings 50 years of teaching and administrative experience, most recently serving as the interim superintendent in Wanaque in Passaic County, where he served from July 2019 to this past June, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before his retirement, he was superintendent of schools in Kearny from 1998 to 2008, and in Hawthorne from 2009-13.

He has also served as principal at Clifton High School and Lyndhurst High School.

Mooney began his career in education as a teacher at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, his alma mater.

Mooney holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Montclair State University.
