Tropical Storm Ida caused flooding in South Brunswick Sept. 1-2.

FEMA representatives will be in South Brunswick today, Monday, Sept. 13, to examine damage from Tropical Storm Ida.

In coordination with Middlesex County Office of Emergency Management (OEM), FEMA representatives will meet with South Brunswick OEM to tour damaged areas of the township.

From 1-5 p.m., FEMA representatives will be at the South Brunswick Municipal Building at 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction, to meet with residents and businesses owners seeking assistance.

Direct questions to South Brunswick Police Lt. Gene Rickle by emailing erickle@sbpdnj.net.

South Brunswick OEM has conducted an after-action review of the storm. The review examined the conditions and response to the widespread flash flooding in the township during the storm on Sept. 1 and 2.

The review was done in conjunction with the Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park and Kingston fire departments.

Some of the findings:
50 Homes damaged
33 Vehicles flooded and towed
15 People rescued from flooded vehicles
1 Firetruck damaged
1 Water pump station damaged

The review also found several issues that impacted the flash flooding problems:

  • Rainfall in excess of 6 inches fell from 5-11 p.m.
  • Garbage cans left out in residential neighborhoods were swept away and clogged storm drains.
  • Several motorists drove around flooded and closed roads.
  • Route 1/Raymond Road continues to have stream overflow problems.

The flash flooding the township experienced was historic in nature. South Brunswick OEM will continue to work with Middlesex County OEM and state officials on the issues of flash flooding.
