There are two seats up for election this fall on the Hillsborough Township Committee, and as of press time Republicans Shawn Lipani and Steven Cohen are the leading vote getters to apprise those spots on the council.
As of the last updated election results by Somerset County on Nov. 3 at 9:09 a.m., Lipani received the most votes of any candidate with 6,965, or 29.86%, and Cohen tallied 6,592 votes for 28.26% of the vote.
Lipani is currently serving his first year as mayor after being elected to the council in 2018. The Hillsborough native also serves on the township’s Board of Adjustment and Planning Board and also on the Somerset County Planning Board and Economic and Business Development Commission.
Cohen, who works as a facilities manager at Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in Jersey City, is running for his first term on the committee and previously served on the Hillsborough Township Board of Education.
The 2021 Democratic candidates for the Hillsborough Township Committee were Committeeman Jeffrey Wright and attorney Roger Koch.
Wright currently stands in third place with 4,998, or 21.42%, of votes received, while Koch has 20.44% of votes with a total of 4,768.
Wright joined the Township Committee in March to fill an unexpired term.
He has experience in local government by serving on the Somerset County Planning Board, and previously served time on Piscataway’s Zoning Board of Adjustment, Open Space Committee and Senior Citizens Committee.
Koch was a former Deputy Attorney General in the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and has worked in private practice since 2002. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and has lived in Hillsborough for the last 20 years.
Election results are not official until certified by Somerset County.
