MARLBORO – The circumstances surrounding a motor vehicle collision that claimed the life of a young man from Freehold Township remain under investigation by the Marlboro Police Department.
According to a press release provided by Marlboro Police Capt. Steve Levy, Patrolman Michael Morgante of the department’s Traffic and Safety Bureau is investigating the collision that occurred at 6 a.m. Nov. 4 on Route 9 north at the border of Marlboro and Manalapan.
James Adamo, 20, of Freehold Township, died as a result of injuries he sustained in the collision.
According to the press release, police received a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision that occurred on Route 9 north at a jughandle at the border of Marlboro and Manalapan. The jughandle is in front of an automobile dealership.
Police said Adamo, who was driving a Nissan Altima, was attempting to make a U-turn at the jughandle to reach Route 9 south. At that time a collision occurred with a Cadillac sport utility vehicle that was being driven by Charles Avella, 39, of Freehold Township.
Avella was traveling in the left lane of Route 9 north when the collision occurred.
Adamo was transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, by ambulance. He was was pronounced deceased at the hospital, according to the press release.
Avella was not injured in the collision. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
Route 9 was closed in both directions from the Marlboro-Manalapan border to Route 520 while emergency personnel were on scene.
Police said at this time it does not appear drugs or alcohol were a contributing cause of the collision.
As of Nov. 10, no charges had been filed in connection with the collision, according to Levy.
According to an obituary posted online by the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold Borough, Adamo was a graduate of Freehold Township High School, Class of 2019. He enjoyed bowling and fishing, and was passionate about automobiles and attending concerts. He was an artist, photographer and woodworker.
He was predeceased by his father, Joel Adamo, in 2012; his maternal grandfather, Anton Schwerthoffer; his paternal grandmother, June Adamo; and an uncle, Donald Schwerthoffer.
Adamo is survived by his mother, Karen Adamo; a sister, Jessica Adamo; his maternal grandmother, Kathy Schwerthoffer; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and his girlfriend Dani.
In addition to officers from the Marlboro Police Department, responding agencies at the scene of the collision included the Morganville First Aid Squad and the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company.
