SAYREVILLE – A $220,104 grant has been received from the state to provide the Sayreville Police Department with body-worn cameras.

On Nov. 22, the Borough Council passed a resolution accepting the $220,104 from New Jersey officials. The funding will be awarded from 2021 through the end of 2025, according to the resolution.

The funding was provided by the state’s body-worn camera grant program. The program is run by the New Jersey Department of Law and Public Safety, Office of the Attorney General.

According to the resolution, the project to provide the body-worn cameras is a joint effort between the Department of Law and Public Safety and the Sayreville Police Department.

The resolution states that the Sayreville Police Department wishes to participate to the fullest extent possible with the Department of Law and Public Safety.

According to the resolution, the Office of the Attorney General will receive funds on the behalf of Sayreville, be responsible for the receipt and review of the application for the funds, and initiate the allocations to Sayreville as authorized.

The council’s action follows a state mandate signed by Gov. Phil Murphy in November 2020 that requires all police officers in New Jersey to wear a body camera. Police departments were required to comply with the mandate by June.
