Marlboro police officers honored for off-duty life-saving efforts

MARLBORO – Four police officers from the Marlboro Police Department have been honored by the Township Council in recognition of their actions to save the life of an unconscious woman.

According to municipal officials, on Oct. 15, Lt. Nicholas Szymanski, Detective Sgt. John Bise, Sgt. Andrew Goldberg and Communications Operator Paul Lorenz were traveling back to Marlboro after participating in the Police Unity Tour in Washington, D.C.

While the officers were making a stop at the Maryland House Travel Plaza on Interstate 95, they observed a commotion and saw an elderly woman on the ground unconscious, not breathing and having no pulse.

The officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the woman began to breathe on her own a short time later. She regained consciousness and had a strong pulse as she was taken to a hospital for further treatment, according to Marlboro officials.

At the Nov. 18 council meeting, Mayor Jonathan Hornik and the members of the Township Council honored the four police officers with a Hometown Hero Award.

Marlboro Police Chief Peter Pezzullo said, “I am extremely proud of the actions these officers and department members took while they were off-duty. Without hesitation, they relied on their training, provided emergency care and saved a life. They are true professionals and we are grateful to have them serve the fine residents and community of Marlboro.”

Szymanski has been employed with the police department since 2000, Bise has been a member of the police department since 1993, Goldberg has been on the force since 1998 and Lorenz has been employed with the police department since 2007.
