The Cranbury Township Board of Education has approved a $2.15 million contract for construction services to build a proposed auxiliary gym at the Cranbury School.

Out of 18 bids for the project, Northeastern Interior Services, LLC, was awarded the contract by the school board at its Jan. 5 meeting.

Board President Pramod Chivate, Vice President Dominique Jones, Rob Christopher, Lindsay McDowell, Laura Hoffman, Colleen Raymond, Lisa Rue, Emma Bossard, and Katherine Lara voted “yes” to approve the contract.

The proposed auxiliary gym is not part of the projects under the $18.46 million school referendum for facilities improvements approved by voters in December.

Funds for the new auxiliary gym will come from the district capital reserve fund. The new auxiliary gym would be located adjacent to the school’s existing gymnasium.

According to the school district, the auxiliary gym would be used for physical education classes, as an inclement weather indoor recess space, and during student arrivals.

The construction for the auxiliary gym will be during the same period projects from the school referendum are built.

Also, during the school board meeting, a referendum contract for Parette Somjen Architects in the amount of $1.37 million was tabled by the school board. The contract will appear again before the school board at its Jan. 26 meeting.
