The East Brunswick Elks named their Citizen of the Year, Maureen Berzok, “a charming woman whose motto is ‘Do a small job well,’ ” according to information provided by Karan Hannalla.

Berzok is an educator, writer, editor, volunteer, wife and mother. Her volunteer and religious work includes serving as lector at Our Lady of Peace Church in North Brunswick. She also performs kitchen service at Elijah’s Promise in New Brunswick.

She fundraises for military and veterans groups.

“Maureen loves giving a helping hand to people in need, especially during the pandemic.

She extensively volunteered with the scouts, including working with Eagle Scout candidates on a journalism-based Eagle Project.

Both her sons were Eagle Scouts so she was involved with the VFW-sponsored scout troop. Her husband Jim served as a scout master of that troop,” Hannalla said.

Professionally, Berzok serves as editor of TapInto East Brunswick and also teaches at Middlesex College. She writes articles about government, education, arts, community growth and suburban development. She publishes poetry, articles about teaching, Holocaust and multicultural studies.

She served many years as writing contest judge for the New Jersey Council of Teachers of English, according to the statement.
