The North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services (DPRCS) resumed its Scholar/Athlete/Artist Award program, honoring North Brunswick students who excel in academics, arts and athletics.
Rohan Bhatia has been selected as Scholar/Athlete/Artist for February 2022, as announced during the April 4 Township Council meeting.
Rohan is a sophomore at North Brunswick Township High School (NBTHS) with a GPA of 4.3. He is a high honors student and is a member of the National Honor Society.
He is a STEM Academy participant and part of the Raider Robotix Club that is responsible for the Innovation Challenge for this year’s competition.
As a member of the Future Business Leaders of America Club, he is the only ninth grader who advanced to the state-level competition in the field of Information Technology.
Rohan works with fellow students to create applications and websites that benefit the high school as a member of the Technology Club.
He represents NBTHS in numerous math competitions with the Mathletes Club.
Rohan volunteered for DPRCS events such as Heritage Day and the North Brunswick Pride Event.
Under the North Brunswick Municipal Youth Alliance program, he has participated in the Get Up and Move Program, promoting wellness to young students, as well as many programs in the past such as the Sept. 11 event, Holi festival, Halloween events, and the annual menorah and tree lightings.
Rohan is an American Red Cross Blood Donor Ambassador and has attended courses and training including FY21 Ethics and Compliance, Your Role in Workplace Diversity, and Working During COVID-19: Safe Work Practices at the Red Cross for providing better service.
He is proficient in Hindi and is currently a student volunteer teacher at HindiUSA where he has numerous volunteer hours of service.
Rohan participates in the VEX IQ Robotics Competition with his friends during his free time. As a group they have represented the State of New Jersey in the World Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, where they won the Excellence Award for technical achievement in robot design and performance.
Rohan has taken swim and saxophone lessons and has even formed a small band.
He was a peer tutor at Linwood School.
Rohan plans to further his education in the field of science and engineering.
“The past two years have been a challenge for everyone, starting with the coronavirus, to Hurricane Ida, and the current situation in Ukraine,” Rohan said after the reading of his proclamation. “These challenges have made it difficult as we essentially were confined to our homes. However, it made me realize how connected to our community we are. More people start to come together and fight against these issues.
“I will continue to do my best to assist this wonderful community,” he said.
David Fritsche was also selected as a Scholar/Athlete/Artist for February 2022.
David is a junior at NBTHS with a 3.95 GPA. He is an honor student and is enrolled in many college prep courses.
He excels in the German language which he has taken for three years.
David is a member of the NBTHS swim team, golf team and cross-country team. He received two varsity letters his freshman year for both swimming and golf, and a junior varsity letter for cross country. He received two additional varsity letters his sophomore year.
He participated in the NBTHS Rock-A-Thon to raise money for various charities.
David started his swim career at age eight at Nob Valley Swim Club. He continued to swim for Riptide Club Team, Brookside Swim Club Team and the North Brunswick Rapids Swim Team.
He worked as a lifeguard at the Renaissance Complex Swim Club in the summer of 2021 and is currently a lifeguard and a certified water safety instructor for the DPRCS Aquatics Division.
David is a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Church in North Brunswick and volunteers his time for special events.
After his proclamation reading, David thanked the mayor and council, director Lou Ann Benson of the DPRCS and his parents for the support.
