MARLBORO – The arrests keep coming in Marlboro.
The latest arrests in the township were made on May 9. According to the Marlboro Police Department, shortly after 6:30 a.m., police received a 911 call from a resident who was reporting that an unknown individual was attempting to gain entry into his neighbor’s vehicle.
The vehicle, a 2018 Porche Macan, was locked and parked in a driveway on Jackie Drive, which is in a residential development off Newman Springs Road (Route 520).
The resident who called police was able to provide a description of the suspect and of the suspect’s vehicle, which was described as a blue BMW, according to a press release.
A short time later, Marlboro police officers were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle on Deerfield Road, off Crine Road, and attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop. The driver of the BMW refused to stop for the officers and a pursuit was initiated, according to the press release.
While fleeing from the officers, the driver of the BMW struck a guardrail on a ramp leading to Route 18 northbound. The collision damaged the BMW.
The officers pursued the vehicle onto Route 18 northbound, but terminated the pursuit shortly thereafter as it was deemed too dangerous to continue, according to the press release.
A description of the BMW was relayed to the Old Bridge and East Brunswick police departments.
At 7 a.m., the Old Bridge Police Department advised Marlboro police the BMW was abandoned at a Shell gas station on Route 18 in East Brunswick and that four African American males were fleeing from the vehicle.
Three suspects were located by officers from the East Brunswick Police Department and one suspect was located by officers from the South River Police Department.
The four suspects were placed under arrest and transported back to Marlboro police headquarters for processing. It was later determined the BMW the suspects were using had been reported stolen out of Nassau County, N.Y.
Arrested were a 27-year-old male from Newark, a 21-year-old male from Newark, one male juvenile from Newark and one male juvenile from Brooklyn, N.Y.
The suspects were charged with various criminal offenses including attempted burglary, receiving stolen property and eluding police, according to the press release.
The two juveniles were released into the custody of family members and the two adults were transported to the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township.
When advised of the incident and the arrests, Marlboro Police Chief Peter Pezzullo said, “When Marlboro residents and the police department work in conjunction, as we did here, it often leads to a successful apprehension.
“Mayor (Jonathan) Hornik has instituted a program which is fully supported by myself and the police department called ‘See Something, Say Something, and We Will Do Something.’
“In this instance, it was the keen eyes of our residents who spotted something suspicious and immediately dialed 911.
“Our officers took it from there and with the assistance of the Old Bridge Police Department and the East Brunswick Police Department, we were able to take four suspected criminals off the street.
“This marks nine arrests made by our officers in the last week alone for attempted vehicle burglaries and other associated crimes. These statistics prove the program is working here in Marlboro,” Pezzullo said.
