Jackson man sentenced to prison for leaving scene of fatal collision

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer has announced that Roberto Alcazar-Sanchez, 28, of Jackson, has been sentenced to seven years in state prison following his guilty plea to knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death in connection with a motor vehicle crash that occurred in Jackson on Dec. 24, 2020.

Alcazar-Sanchez pleaded guilty before state Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan, sitting in Toms River, on Feb. 24 and was sentenced to prison on May 13, according to a press release from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Billhimer reported that on Dec. 24, 2020 at 6 p.m., Jackson police officers responded to the area of Cedar Swap Road and Interstate 195 to investigate a report of a motor vehicle crash with serious injuries.

An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit and the Jackson Police Department determined that a 2010 Mercedes Benz, driven by Norman Shtab, 83, of Howell, was exiting Interstate 195 at Exit 21.

Shtab’s wife, Phyllis Shtab, 81, also of Howell, was a passenger in the vehicle.

As Shtab was attempting to make a left turn onto Cedar Swap Road, his vehicle collided with a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado.

Norman Shtab and Phyllis Shtab were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, following the crash.

Norman Shtab was treated for his injuries and later released.

On Dec. 26, 2020, Phyllis Shtab succumbed to the injuries she sustained as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased.

On Dec. 30, 2020, a warrant was issued for the arrest of the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, who had been identified through an investigation as Alcazar-Sanchez.

Billhimer said Alcazar-Sanchez fled the scene of the Dec. 24, 2020 crash on foot.

Further investigation revealed that Alcazar-Sanchez then fled the United States and traveled to Mexico.

On March 3, 2021, Alcazar-Sanchez surrendered himself to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Laredo, Texas. He was extradited back to Ocean County and had remained lodged in the Ocean County Jail, Toms River, since his return on March 31, 2021, according to the press release.
