The League of Women Voters of Lawrence Township (LWVLT), part of the national and state League of Women Voters organization, announced its annual Youth Leadership Awards for 2022.

The award is given to graduating high school seniors in Lawrence, Trenton and Ewing who exemplify civic leadership in their community. The 2022 Youth Leadership Award winners are Margaret Gronenthal, Lawrence High School, founder of the school’s “Our Minds Matter” student mental health club; and Renae Hemmings, Trenton Central High School, community environmental advocate and member of the Science Mentors Civic Project.

“We received impressive student submissions that clearly demonstrate there are bright future civic leaders among us,” LWVLT Co-chair Katharine Schumacher said in a prepared statement. “The applications that we received truly were tremendous, but there were two that were exceptional and we are pleased to present two awards for 2022. We continue to be uplifted by the work that young civic leaders are engaging with in our communities. We greatly appreciate the support from the league and our community that enables us to make this award every year.”

The LWVLT will present the two awards at its annual meeting and park potluck on June 26. Each winner will receive a $1,000 award in recognition of their achievement and dedication to their community.

“We congratulate our inspiring winners and all our worthy applicants. The league is here to support, applaud, and promote our next generation of civic leaders. Members of the community are invited to contribute to the LWVLT Youth Leadership Award fund. All proceeds go directly to the students,” she said in the statement.
