Paterson man charged with allegedly stealing South Amboy police vehicle; crashes in Woodbridge

WOODBRIDGE – A 28-year-old Paterson man was charged with allegedly stealing a South Amboy police vehicle, according to Scott Kuzma, township chief law enforcement officer.

The South Amboy Police Department advised Woodbridge police that a marked police unit was stolen from their jurisdiction at approximately 1:05 p.m. on July 4, police said.

A short time later, the stolen police vehicle was allegedly involved in a motor vehicle crash on Route 35 near South Park Drive in Woodbridge. The stolen vehicle continued north where it was allegedly involved in a second crash on Route 1 north near Avenel Street, police said.

After the second crash, the suspect allegedly fled on foot traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 1. He allegedly attempted to enter and carjack several vehicles before being apprehended, police said.

The suspect is charged with three counts of carjacking, receiving stolen property, assault by auto, resisting arrest, endangering an injured victim and obstructing the administration of law or other governmental function. He was processed at the Woodbridge Police Department and transported to the Middlesex County Corrections Center in North Brunswick.
