Remember: Steel artifact from World Trade Center driven to Hopewell Township 11 years ago

10-ton steel artifact from the World Trade Center site loaded up 11-years-ago on Aug. 16, 2011 to head down to Hopewell Township.

Hopewell Township invites the public to bring a lawn chair for its annual remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

This year’s ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 10 at Woolsey Park, 221 Washington Crossing Pennington Road, Titusville.

Eleven years ago – Aug. 16, 2011 – a 10-ton steel artifact from the World Trade Center site was brought to the township.

The artifact was secured and traveled from Hanger 17 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, according to Mike Chipowsky.

The artifact became the centerpiece of the Hopewell Valley Sept. 11 and Emergency Services Memorial at Woolsey Park in the township.

This year marks 21 years since the attacks, which killed close to 3,000 people when four passenger airliner planes were hijacked by al-Queda, an Islamic terrorist group. Two planes slammed into the World Trade Center buildings in New York City and one plane hit the Pentagon building in Washington D.C. Another hijacked plane, Flight 93, initially headed to Washington D.C., was thwarted by passengers and crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pa.
