EDISON – A Newark man was allegedly “drifting” when he lost control of his green BMW, jumped a curb, hit two pedestrians and drove off, according to Deputy Police Chief Robert J. Dudash Jr.

The incident occurred at 7:38 p.m. on Aug. 28 after a car show at the New Jersey Convention Center in Raritan Center, police said.

Dudash said “drifting” is when a driver slides the car’s tires on the ground, which is considered “reckless, careless” driving.

The two pedestrians struck included a 49-year-old South Plainfield man and a 20-year-old West Orange man.

The South Plainfield man was treated for a head injury and was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. He was treated and released, Dudash said.

The West Orange man suffered leg injuries. He initially refused treatment at the scene, but police learned he went to the hospital and was treated and released, Dudash said.

In addition, the West Orange man was holding a pet turtle at the time he was hit. The turtle was injured and is currently being treated at the Edison Animal Shelter, Dudash said.

Dudash said the Newark man as of Aug. 30 has not been apprehended. No charges have been filed as of yet.
