Teen bicyclist struck, killed by car in Hightstown

A Hightstown teenager died after he was struck by a car while he was riding his bicycle across the street at West Ward Street and Mercer Street in Hightstown, according to the Hightstown Police Department.

The boy, 13, was struck by a car driven by an East Windsor Township woman at around 9 p.m. Sept. 9, police said. She was turning left from Mercer Street onto West Ward Street when her car struck the boy.

When police officers arrived, they found the teen unconscious and breathing. He suffered severe trauma to his body and head, police said.

While waiting for the Hightstown First Aid Squad, the teen went into cardiac arrest, police said. The officers administered CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) until Hightstown First Aid Squad emergency medical technicians (EMTs) arrived.

They EMTs continued to administer CPR until Capital Health Systems paramedics arrived and rushed the teen to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, where he was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m., police said.

The teen was a student at the Melvin H. Kreps Middle School, police said. School personnel have been advised of the incident so they may prepare for any services that students may need as the result of the teen’s death, police said.

The driver of the car that struck the teen was issued a summons for careless driving, following an investigation into the incident, police said. The incident was investigated by the Hightstown Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office Serious Collision Response Team.
