2022 Archives and History Day will be held at Brookdale on Oct. 1

Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon has announced that Professor Richard Veit will be the featured speaker at the county clerk’s 27th annual Archives and History Day event to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft.

Residents of all communities are invited to attend the free event.

Veit’s keynote address, “Hidden in Plain Sight: Reinterpreting Marlpit Hall, a Monument to Monmouth County History,” delves into his work at one of Monmouth County’s most treasured historical properties and its storied, if not dark, past, and its impacts on
Monmouth County’s history and identity, according to a press release.

“Dr. Veit’s presentation sheds unique light for this year’s Archives and History Day theme, ‘Monuments and Markers in Monmouth County,’ ” said Hanlon. “His expertise in New Jersey history will certainly illustrate that monuments in the county commemorate all aspects of our shared story and we are thrilled to have him for this year’s event.”

Veit is a professor of anthropology and the associate dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Monmouth University, West Long Branch. His areas of expertise are archaeology, historical archaeology, New Jersey history, Native Americans and historical preservation.

Veit is the author or co-author of dozens of articles and reviews, and five books, including “Digging New Jersey’s Past: Historical Archaeology in the Garden State” (Rutgers Press, 2002), and “New Jersey: A History of the Garden State” (Rutgers Press, 2012), both of which are listed on the New Jersey State Library’s 101 Great New Jersey Books list.

Veit conducts numerous archaeological excavations at New Jersey historical sites, including many in Monmouth County, according to the press release.

Additionally, Veit serves on the New Jersey Historical Commission, as well as the boards of the Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology, Crossroads of the American Revolution and the Archaeological Society of New Jersey.

He serves as the president of the Middle Atlantic Archaeological Conference. His work has been featured on National Public Radio, Archaeology Magazine and TEDx Navesink in 2013, as well as a multitude of conferences around the state and region, according to the press release.

During the event, approximately 50 local and state history organizations will set up displays about topics relating to New Jersey history and their organizations. Archives and History Day will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Robert J. Collins Arena on the Brookdale Community College campus in Lincroft.

“Archives and History Day is an incredible opportunity to learn about our county’s
history and to meet the people who are dedicated to preserving and sharing it,” said
Monmouth County archivist Julia Telonidis. “The featured speakers are always major
contributors to that experience.”
