Monmouth County Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone has released the following statement regarding making Sept. 11 an official holiday:
“On behalf of the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners, I am calling on state and federal legislators to make Sept. 11 an official holiday to honor the victims, first responders, volunteers and all who were affected by the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
“Those of us who lived through the attacks of Sept. 11 will never forget, but we now need to make sure our children, and their children, understand the importance of this day. The events of Sept. 11 should be in every history book in our schools and there should be an official holiday to make the magnitude of this day clear.
“We need to acknowledge a day of rest and remembrance so that everyone is given the opportunity to observe Sept. 11, whether that be by attending a ceremony, visiting a local memorial, thanking a first responder or talking to our children about what happened on Sept. 11.
“While our world has changed dramatically, this is one thing we need to stay united on: we need to make sure what happened on Sept. 11, 2001 does not happen again, is always remembered and never forgotten,” Arnone said.
The county commissioners hosted the Monmouth County Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands with those who lost loved ones from Monmouth County on Sept. 11, 2001, according to a press release.
Mount Mitchill is home to Monmouth County’s Sept. 11 memorial which is a tribute to the 147 men and women who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks, according to the press release.
The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced the launch of the new GeoHub website, a community engagement platform that will allow residents to download Geographic Information System (GIS) data and explore web maps and applications offered by the county, according to a press release.
“I want to commend the Information Technology Services Department for making incredible strides to successfully change the GeoHub website by providing a fresh appearance to the new website and for providing new tools for the public to access a large amount of data about the county,” Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone said.
“County residents will now be able to explore the Grown in Monmouth directories along with the county’s cultural and heritage virtual tours and other important resources,” he said.
Commissioner Nick DiRocco said, “The continuance of the previously featured GIS content includes interactive web maps and applications to locate information about Monmouth County’s services and resources, as well as interactive story maps to learn more about the county’s history and culture. Open data downloads for authoritative GIS sets and external GIS data resources are also still available on the new GeoHub website.”
Monmouth County GIS is responsible for developing and maintaining a central GIS database, creating and updating countywide datasets, producing cartographic paper and digital maps, providing data modeling and analysis, and developing web mapping services and applications, according to the press release.

Special People United to Ride (SPUR) will hold its third annual virtual 2-mile run during the week of Oct. 1-8. The event is sponsored by McLoone’s Restaurants and C&C Air, Heat and Plumbing.
Participants can walk, trot or gallop – on foot or on horseback – for 2 miles, anywhere and anytime that week, to raise funds to benefit the SPUR therapeutic riding program for individuals with disabilities, according to a press release.
All registered participants will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and have a chance to win a McLoone’s gift card in a random drawing. Registrants can also set up their own fundraising web pages to encourage friends who do not want to walk or run to support their efforts. Entries are $45 per person.

SPUR is a nonprofit organization that works with the Monmouth County Park System to provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to achieve personal goals through therapeutic horsemanship. The park system’s Sunnyside Equestrian Center in Lincroft provides a safe environment for students to enjoy the freedom of riding and handling a horse, according to the press release.
