Hillsborough police officer, marine veteran to serve as Memorial Day parade grand marshal

The Hillsborough community will come together to honor all military service personnel – past and present – for their sacrifices Memorial Day weekend.

It will begin with an annual salute to Veterans breakfast followed by a Memorial Day Parade and Garden of Honor Commemoration program May 27.

“Each year we look forward to the Salute to Military Service and Veteran Breakfast.  Our teams here at the township are hard at work planning for another great event,” Mayor Shawn Lipani said.

The Memorial Day Commemorative Program will kick off with the “Salute to Military Service” Breakfast at the Peter J. Biondi Municipal Building at 7:30 a.m. It will be followed by the Memorial Day Parade which will begin at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Auten and Triangle roads. The event will conclude with the ceremony at the Garden of Honor, at the parade finish line. The “Salute to Military Service” Breakfast will be held on May 27 rain or shine. The rain date for the Parade and Garden of Honor Ceremony is Sunday, May 28.

Hillsborough Police Officer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran Rick Tichenor will serve as Grand Marshall for the Memorial Day events.

Tichenor enlisted in August 2005 and went to boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. In January 2006, he attended the School of Infantry and graduated as an infantry assaultman. He traveled to Mongolia for a United Nations peacekeeping mission. That was followed by a deployment in 2008 to Akashat, Iraq to conduct border operations between Iraq and Syria. In 2010 he went to Mozambique, Africa to provide security for medical teams and in 2011, he was deployed to Sangin, Afghanistan.

In 2017, Tichenor was hired by the Hillsborough Township Police Department.

All Hillsborough military service personnel are invited to participate in the “Salute to Military Service” Breakfast and to lead Hillsborough’s Memorial Day Parade and Commemoration Program on May 27. Registration is required for the breakfast and can be completed online at the township’s Parks and Recreation website, by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at (908) 369-4832, or by completing the paper registration form.
