Dear Editor,

As a resident of Hopewell Valley, I have serious concerns about the proposed $87 million referendum for our school district. While we all want to support our schools, the lack of transparency regarding the financial implications is troubling. Here are a few key points that require clarification:

1. Per-Student Spending vs. Academic Performance
Hopewell Valley spends $28,901 per student—well above the state average of $19,164—yet only 39% of high school students are proficient in math and 53% in reading. In comparison, West Windsor-Plainsboro spends $32,140 per student and has significantly higher proficiency rates (68% in math, 77% in reading). Simply spending more money doesn’t guarantee success; we need to ensure funds are spent effectively.

2. AstroTurf Fields – Inflated Costs
The district proposes $6.8 million for AstroTurf fields, but typical installation costs range from $700,000 to $1.5 million. Moreover, artificial turf can increase the risk of injuries and requires expensive maintenance and replacement every 8-10 years. Natural grass offers better long-term value and safety benefits.

3. Timberlane Middle School Renovations
The $24.45 million earmarked for Timberlane renovations seems excessive, given industry standards for school renovations typically range from $150 to $300 per square foot. We need transparency on what these renovations entail.

4. HVAC and Infrastructure Costs
The significant spending on HVAC upgrades and roof replacements also raises questions. Commercial HVAC installations generally cost $15 to $30 per square foot, while roof replacements range from $8 to $15 per square foot. A detailed breakdown would help ensure these projects are necessary and cost-effective.

5. Economic Impact
With inflation still affecting many households, an extra $500 per year in taxes could create serious financial hardships for some families. It is essential that the referendum’s costs are justified and won’t unduly burden the community.

We deserve transparency and accountability in how taxpayer money is spent. Until we get clear answers, I encourage everyone to vote “No” on the referendum.

Sincerely,
