A Pennington man is facing multiple charges after his vehicle crashed into a pillar at the entrance to the Stop & Shop building on Denow Road, according to the Hopewell Township Police Department.

The 18-year-old man was charged with eluding, criminal mischief and unlawful taking of a means of conveyance in the incident, which was reported at 12:10 p.m. on May 30, police said.

The man was driving a Genesis GV7 sport utility vehicle in the parking lot when he lost control of it and struck two parked cars. There were no occupants in the vehicles, police said.

As he attempted to flee in the SUV, he lost control and it struck the Stop & Shop building. He got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, but he was apprehended a short distance away from the crash scene, police said.

There were no reported injuries to the driver or to pedestrians. The building did not suffer structural damage and was declared to be safe.

The Hopewell Township Police Department, the Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, the Pennington Police Department and the Pennington Fire Co. responded to the scene.

The investigation is being handled by police Detective Christopher Vaccarino and Patrol Officer Neil Hunt.
