A ribbon-cutting ceremony has been set for June 14 at 9 a.m. to open an elevated boardwalk through the Maidenhead Meadows section of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by an informal walk through Maidenhead Meadows Park at 10 a.m., starting at the historic Brearley House. It is owned by Lawrence Township.
The elevated boardwalk crosses through scenic wetlands. It is less than a half-mile long and takes bicyclists and pedestrians across Maidenhead Meadows, off Princeton Pike.
“This is an important opening for the Lawrence Hopewell Trail,” said David Sandahl, chairman of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corporation’s board of trustees. “Lawrence Township has really delivered on this project.”
Lawrence Township received grant funds to design and build the boardwalk segment.
The Maidenhead Meadows segment completes a critical link in the southern portion of the Lawrence Hopewell Trail. Combined with the recently re-opened trail through The Lawrenceville School campus, it allows users to go through the area without using Princeton Pike, officials said.
“This project demonstrates Lawrence Township’s long-standing commitment to walkability, bikeability and access to open space,” Mayor Patricia Hendricks Farmer said.
“We are proud to partner with the Lawrence Hopewell Trail Corporation to make our community healthier, more connected and more sustainable.”
The Lawrence Hopewell Trail is a 20-plus-mile-long bicycle and pedestrian path that winds through public and private property to connect Lawrence and Hopewell townships.
Construction on the trail has been under way since 2002. The trail is about 93% complete. There are four remaining projects to be completed. The goal is to complete it by 2026.
