Cranbury: June primary

When Cranbury voters cast their ballots in the June primary there will be uncontested Township Committee primary races for the Democratic and Republican candidates.

The primary, which occurs on June 10, features Democratic candidates Lisa Knierim, who currently serves as Cranbury’s mayor, Committeewoman Barbara Rogers, and Republican candidate Joe Buonavolonta.

Buonavolonta is the only candidate in the Republican primary race.

The candidates seek to secure their place in the Nov. 4 general election for two, three-year terms on the Township Committee.

Buonavolonta is running to earn his first term on the five-member governing body. He currently sits on the township’s Zoning Board of Adjustment serving as vice-chairperson and is on the Development Review Committee.

In addition to volunteering in town and previously served on the Clock Winding Committee, Buonavolonta has served in the Cranbury Volunteer Fire Department for more than 16 years.

Knierim is running for re-election to a second, three-year term on the Committee. She serves as mayor of Cranbury for 2025 and is also on the Planning Board as the mayor’s designee.

She works as president of 1880 Hospitality and has volunteered at Cranbury Day, for the PTO, and Skeets Food Pantry.

Rogers is running for re-election to a third, three-year term on the Committee. Rogers has previously served as mayor and deputy mayor.

She currently is on the Shade Tree Commission as the Township Committee’s liaison and is the liaison to the Enviornmental Commission. In addition to serving on the Enviornmental Commission for more than 16 years, six years as chairperson, Rogers has previously volunteered as a walking tour guide for the Cranbury Historic and Preservation Society and has led the Green Team.

Knierim, Rogers, Deputy Mayor Eman El-Badawi, Committeeman Robert Christopher, and Committeeman Matt Scott currently sit on the five-member Township Committee.

Early voting for the primary is currently underway and runs through June 8. Following the June 10 primary, the general election is set to take place on Nov. 4.
