The Yankees ended their three-game series against the Oakland Athletics with a 12-5 win on Sunday at Yankee Stadium. Aaron Judge hit two home runs, Jazz Chisholm Jr. drove in four runs, and Marcus Stroman earned the win in his return from injury. The victory gave the Yankees their second series win in the past two and a half weeks.
Chisholm opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run to right field. In the third, following a fielding error that allowed Trent Grisham to reach second, a walk to Aaron Judge, and a hit-by-pitch to Ben Rice, Chisholm tripled with the bases loaded. He then scored on a wild pitch from Luis Severino. Chisholm has homered three times in his last four games and is batting .318 with six home runs, 18 RBIs, and four stolen bases since returning from a strained right oblique on June 3. In the sixth, he appeared to injure his right hand while checking a swing but remained in the game.
In his first appearance as a visitor at Yankee Stadium, Severino allowed seven runs—six earned—on five hits over 3.2 innings. He walked three, hit two batters, threw a wild pitch, and gave up two home runs. Severino is now 2-9 with a 6.79 ERA in home games and 0-7 in decisions at Yankee Stadium this season.
In the fourth inning, Cody Bellinger doubled off the right-field wall, then Judge followed with a two-run home run to left field, ending Severino’s outing. Bellinger homered in the fifth inning, driving in Anthony Volpe, who had singled and stolen second, and Grisham, who had walked. Judge hit his second home run in the seventh inning after another walk by Grisham. Judge’s home runs were his 29th and 30th of the season. He now has 44 career multi-homer games and has reached 30 home runs in a season for the sixth time.
Stroman made his first start since April after missing time due to left knee inflammation. He pitched five innings, allowing three hits and one run—a solo home run by Willie MacIver in the fifth. He struck out three and walked none, earning his first win of the season and improving to 1-1.
Oakland scored four runs in the sixth inning. JJ Bleday walked, and Brent Rooker doubled. Nick Kurtz hit an RBI single. After a walk to Max Muncy, Tyler Soderstrom walked, scoring Rooker. Luis Urías grounded out, scoring Kurtz. MacIver walked, and Denzel Clarke grounded out, scoring Muncy.
In the eighth inning, Anthony Volpe was ejected for the first time in his career after a strikeout and a reaction to the call. First base umpire Chad Fairchild made the ejection.
Michael Kelly pitched a perfect eighth inning. Luke Weaver pitched the ninth in a non-save situation, retiring all three batters he faced.
The Yankees improved to 48–37 and will begin a road series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. Carlos Rodón (9-5, 2.92 ERA) will start for New York. Max Scherzer (0-0, 5.63 ERA) is scheduled to start for Toronto.
According to current odds on BetMGM, the Yankees are listed as –125 money line favorites for Monday’s matchup in Toronto, with the over/under set at nine total runs. The Yankees also hold a 48–37 record against the spread this season. Futures odds place New York at approximately +600 to win the World Series, placing them just behind the Dodgers in most sportsbooks’ outlook.
Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s performance has also caught the attention of bettors. Sportsbooks have priced him at around +475 to hit a home run in his next game and –185 to record over 0.5 total bases, based on his recent surge that includes home runs in four of his last six games.
