So I booked a cozy lakeside cabin through Airbnb, rented a car for the scenic drive up the mountain, and packed my gear for hiking and some much-needed downtime by the water.

One of the best things about Big Bear Lake is that it’s a year-round destination, with each season offering unique experiences.
Regardless of the time of year you decide to visit, having a car makes exploring much easier, especially if you want to see different parts of the lake and surrounding areas.
- Spring: As the snow melts, the landscape bursts with the colors of wildflowers and lush greenery. It’s the perfect time for hiking trails like Castle Rock, where you can soak in panoramic lake views. Spring is also an excellent time for fishing, as the lake is well-stocked with trout.
- Summer: Warm days and cool nights make summer ideal for water activities. You can spend an entire afternoon kayaking, followed by a lakeside picnic across the calm waters. The summer also brings mountain biking, zip-lining, and the annual Independence Day fireworks show over the lake, which is a must-see.
- Fall: Autumn is my favorite time at Big Bear Lake. The crisp air and vibrant fall foliage create an unforgettable atmosphere. The Oktoberfest celebration is a must-visit, offering Bavarian-style festivities complete with beer, bratwurst, and live music. It’s also a quieter time to explore the hiking trails, as summer crowds have begun to fade after the summer rush.
- Winter: Snow blankets the town, transforming Big Bear into a Winter Wonderland. Skiers and snowboarders flock to Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, while families enjoy sledding and snowshoeing. There’s nothing quite like ending a day on the slopes by warming up next to a roaring fire in a cozy cabin.
How to Fit Big Bear Lake Into Your California Itinerary
Whether planning a dedicated trip to Big Bear Lake or adding it to a larger California adventure, the area is surprisingly easy to incorporate into your travel plans.
If you’re visiting Los Angeles, a weekend trip to Big Bear is an easy and rewarding escape from the city’s hustle and bustle; during my visit, I extended my trip to spend a couple of days in Los Angeles before returning home.
It’s also an ideal stop for road-trippers exploring the Pacific Coast Highway; after soaking up the coastal views, a few days in the mountains provides a refreshing contrast.
If you’re flying into California, the closest major airport is Ontario International Airport, just under two hours away. Rental cars are the best way to get to Big Bear Lake if you haven’t arrived in your own vehicle; public transport options are limited.
Once you arrive, parking is generally easy to find, and most attractions are within a short drive from the town center.
For accommodations, there’s something for every budget, from charming bed-and-breakfasts to luxury cabins with hot tubs and lakefront views. Many visitors also opt for vacation rentals, which offer the comfort of a home-away-from-home experience.
I stayed at The Club at Big Bear Village, which was one of the best places I have vacationed. It came with a garage to park my rental car, and the well-maintained clubhouse, complete with a pool table, made everything feel all the more accommodating.
The Fascinating History of Big Bear Lake
Before it became a beloved getaway, Big Bear Lake had a rich and storied past.
Originally home to the indigenous Serrano people, who thrived in the area for thousands of years, the region saw its first significant shift with the arrival of Spanish explorers in the late 1700s.
In the 1860s, gold was discovered in nearby Holcomb Valley, sparking a brief but intense gold rush. Prospectors flooded the area, and soon, small settlements emerged. By the early 20th century, Big Bear Lake had transformed again, but this time, into a tourist destination.
The construction of the Big Bear Dam in 1912 created the lake as we know it today, attracting anglers, boaters, and outdoor enthusiasts.
Later, in the 1930s, Hollywood took notice, and Big Bear Lake became a favorite filming location for Westerns and adventure films (seeing it in person, there’s no questioning why this is so!).
Today, Big Bear Lake continues to be a haven for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike, blending its rich history with modern attractions that draw visitors year-round.
Why I’d Visit Big Bear Lake Again (and Again)
Big Bear Lake was everything I had hoped for and more. It’s rare to find a place that offers diverse activities while maintaining an inviting, small-town atmosphere.
Whether hiking through alpine forests, kayaking in the sun, or sipping hot cocoa by the fire after a day in the snow, every moment will feel like a breath of fresh air – literally and figuratively.
Would I go back? Absolutely.
There’s much more to explore, from hidden hiking trails to new restaurants and seasonal events. No matter the time of year, Big Bear Lake offers a memorable experience that leaves you planning your next visit.
