PLAINSBORO TOWNSHIP: Memorial service scheduled for Robbinsville school superintendent

The teenage driver who hit and killed Robbinsville School Superintendent Dr. Steven Mayer has been charged in his death.

A memorial service for Robbinsville School District Superintendent will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Princeton Alliance Church, 20 Schalks Crossing Road, Plainsboro Township, N.J.
Dr. Mayer was killed early Tuesday morning when he was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old school district student while he was jogging on Robbinsville-Edinburg Road near Robbinsville High School. Dr. Mayer’s dog was also struck and killed.
“Tragedy likes this hits hard,” said Lead Pastor Boyd Hannold on the Princeton Alliance Church website. “He was just with us at PAC on Sunday, worshipping with his family, listening to the message, extending a warm welcome and a big smile to those around him. After the service, he sought out Pastor Dawie so he could share a word of thanks and encouragement with him. True to form, I watched him affirm and build up a young pastor. That was Steve . . . always investing in others, speaking truth into their lives.
“This loss runs deep, but I’m reminded that when we feel great loss, it’s because we also feel great love. And Steve was most certainly loved by all who knew him,” wrote Pastor Hannold.
Because space is limited at Princeton Alliance Church, the church is asking those attending the service to arrive early. Overflow parking will be available in the Plainsboro Village Shopping Center and township police will facilitate traffic for safety.
Arrangements have been made for additional venues to carry video of the service. Among those are Robbinsville High School in Robbinsville; Queenship of Mary Catholic Church in Plainsboro; and St. David the King in Princeton Junction.
Robbinsville School District was closed Tuesday and Wednesday and all after-school activities were cancelled. Students returned for a full day of school Thursday and both staff and outside counselors were available to students as needed. The school district is closed on Friday, April 22, to observe Passover.
Out of respect for Dr. Mayer, his family and the Robbinsville School District, Robbinsville Township has postponed the first Green Fair scheduled for Saturday, April 23, at Pond Road Middle School.
The incident remains under investigation by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office and the Robbinsville Township Police Department. No charges have been filed and no motor vehicle citations have been issued as of Thursday, April 21.
